Fandango Streaming Explained: Rentals, Purchases and Free Movies (Formerly Vudu)

One name, two services: Fandango sells movie tickets, and its streaming store — once Vudu — rents and sells digital movies and has free, ad-supported titles.

"Fandango streaming" means Fandango's digital movie store — the service that started as Vudu, became Fandango at Home in 2024 and in 2026 simplified its name to just Fandango. It isn't a subscription like Netflix: you rent or buy individual movies and shows, or watch a selection free with ads. The other Fandango is the website and app for buying movie tickets.

Information checked: October 10, 2026, for the US.

How renting and buying works

  • Rent a title to watch within a limited period; the store shows the rental terms before you pay.
  • Buy a title to keep it in your digital library and watch it again whenever you like.
  • New releases often arrive here first. Recent films reach digital rental and purchase weeks or months before a subscription service. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (October 6), Coyote vs. Acme (September 29) and The End of Oak Street (September 15) all went on sale digitally, with Fandango among the stores, before any streaming date was announced — more in new movies on streaming.

Free movies with ads

Part of the catalog is free to watch with ads. Streaming guides still label it "Fandango at Home Free". When we checked JustWatch's US listings on October 9, 2026, it included Oppenheimer, The Social Network and Noah Baumbach's Kicking and Screaming — see where trending older movies are streaming.

What happened to Vudu?

  1. Vudu launched in 2005 and later became part of Fandango.
  2. In 2024 it became Fandango at Home.
  3. In 2026 the service dropped "at Home" and is now simply Fandango.

Existing libraries, accounts and sign-ins carried over through the changes. Vudu joined Movies Anywhere in 2014; Fandango's 2026 announcement doesn't say whether anything changes there, so if you rely on it, check the Movies Anywhere connection in your account settings.

When renting beats subscribing

  • Renting makes sense for one new release you want to see now, or an older film that isn't on any service you pay for.
  • A subscription makes sense when a service carries several things you want to watch that month.

To check whether a film is already included in one of your subscriptions before you rent it, search a streaming guide such as JustWatch with the country set to the US.
