PS5 Anime Update: Sony and Crunchyroll's New Anime Hub, Explained
The anime hub coming to the PlayStation 5 home screen: what Sony and Crunchyroll announced, what's still unknown, and how to watch anime on PS5 today.
The PlayStation 5 anime update is a dedicated anime hub coming to the PS5 home screen in spring 2027, announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll on October 7, 2026. It will bring anime, anime-inspired games and quick access to the Crunchyroll app together in one place. Nothing has changed on your console yet: today, you watch anime on PS5 through the Crunchyroll app.
Information checked: October 10, 2026. Sony and Crunchyroll haven't published a launch date, screenshots or regional details yet.
What was announced
- A dedicated anime space in the PS5 home experience, in the announcement's words, rather than just another app tile.
- What it brings together: anime, anime-inspired games and easy access to the full Crunchyroll app.
- When: "next spring", which means spring 2027.
- Where: Crunchyroll's first Anime Future Forum, where PlayStation chief executive Hideaki Nishino confirmed the hub will sit in the PS5's main menu.
Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini put the thinking simply: "Serving fans means meeting them where they already are."
What we don't know yet
- An exact launch date
- Which countries get it first
- Whether watching anime in the hub will need a Crunchyroll membership
- What it looks like — no screenshots have been released
How to watch anime on PS5 today
Install the Crunchyroll app from the PlayStation Store and sign in. Until the hub arrives, that's the main way to watch Crunchyroll's anime on the console.
Why Sony is doing this
Sony bought Crunchyroll in 2021, so the hub connects two of its own businesses. PlayStation Productions is also making an anime series, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, due next year.
Getting the best picture from a console
A PS5 is also a capable streaming device. For anime and films, use your TV's Filmmaker or Movie mode and turn off motion smoothing — see the best TV settings for movies and series. For what else is new to stream this month, see new movies on streaming.
