IPTV Audio Out of Sync? How to Fix Lip-Sync Delay

When voices don't match lips, the delay comes from one of three places: the stream, the TV's picture processing, or the audio chain. Here's how to find and fix it.

Out-of-sync audio almost always comes from one of three places: the stream itself, your TV's picture processing, or the audio chain to a soundbar or receiver. A two-minute test tells you which, and each has a straightforward fix.

Step 1: Find where the delay comes from

  1. Try several channels. If only one channel is off, the problem is in that stream — skip to "Stream problems".
  2. Switch to the TV's built-in speakers (temporarily disconnect or switch off the soundbar). If sync is fine now, the delay is in your audio chain.
  3. Switch the TV to Game mode briefly. Game mode turns off most picture processing. If sync improves, the TV's video processing is delaying the picture.
  4. Try another app or device on the same TV. If sync is fine elsewhere, look at the player app's settings.

Fix: TV picture processing

Motion smoothing, noise reduction and some "enhancement" features hold frames back to process them, so the picture falls behind the sound.

  • Turn motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus, TruMotion, Motionflow and similar) off or to its lowest setting.
  • Disable extra noise reduction and "clarity" features for streaming inputs.
  • Use a picture mode designed for accuracy, such as Filmmaker or Movie.

Fix: soundbar or receiver (the audio chain)

When audio goes through extra hardware, each step adds processing time.

  1. Use the TV's HDMI ARC or eARC port for the soundbar where possible, and enable HDMI-CEC so devices can coordinate.
  2. Look for an Auto Lip Sync option on the TV or soundbar and turn it on.
  3. Use the AV sync / audio delay slider on the TV, soundbar or receiver. If sound arrives before lips, add delay to the audio; if it arrives after, reduce any delay already set.
  4. As a test, set the streaming device's audio output to PCM/Stereo. If sync improves, surround-format passthrough is adding latency — keep PCM for TV channels if you prefer.
  5. Bluetooth speakers and headphones add noticeable delay by design. Some devices offer calibration (Apple TV has Wireless Audio Sync); otherwise wired or ARC-connected speakers stay in sync better.

Fix: the player app

  • Many IPTV players have an audio delay setting (sometimes per channel). Adjust in small steps — 50–100 ms at a time — until lips match.
  • Switch the app's decoder between hardware and software; a struggling decoder can drift.
  • Update the app and device.
  • Turn match frame rate off temporarily as a test; frame-rate switching on some TVs briefly unsettles sync.

Stream problems

If one channel is consistently out while others are fine, the offset is in the source. Report the channel and time to your provider. For live events, re-opening the channel sometimes resets it.

Quick reference

Clue Likely cause Fix
Only one channel Stream Report; reopen channel
Fixed by TV speakers Soundbar/receiver chain ARC/eARC, Auto Lip Sync, AV delay
Fixed by Game mode TV processing Motion smoothing and enhancements off
Fine in other apps Player app App audio delay; switch decoder
Bluetooth audio Wireless latency Calibrate or use wired/ARC

Frequently asked questions

Why is audio ahead of the picture only with my soundbar?

The TV delays the picture while processing it, but sends audio to the soundbar immediately. Enable Auto Lip Sync or add a small audio delay on the soundbar or TV.

Do Bluetooth headphones cause lip-sync delay?

Yes, Bluetooth adds latency by design. Use a device's calibration option if it has one, or wired/ARC audio for the best sync.
